Ultrasound & Genetic Testing Results
We went back to Wilmington for a follow up ultrasound and to review genetic testing results with Dr. Odibo. The ultrasound pretty much confirmed her suspicion of arthrogryposis (AMC) for baby Lydia.
Only three of the 113 genetic tests came back…the good news is that they were all negative. I had to give more blood so they could finish testing for the other 110. So now, we prayerfully wait another two weeks for those results to come back.
Hope
We asked Dr. Odibo if Lydia’s condition is as bleak as we were lead to believe from my general OB. (We filled her in that my general OB suspected that Lydia would likely die in utero, or shortly after birth.) Dr. Odibo said, “Oh no, your baby will more than likely live, just have some orthopedic challenges after birth. Further testing will have to rule out anything lethal that is causing the arthrogryposis, but most babies make it.”
Whaaaaat? Praise the Lord! Well, I’m glad we cleared that up.
Her heart
They were able to get a better view of her heart this visit. From what they could see, her heart looks good! Thank you, Jesus! She will have an echocardiogram done at UNC in the coming weeks for the cardiologist there to get a detailed view and prepare for her delivery.
Her stomach
They still couldn’t see her stomach, but suspect this is because she isn’t swallowing the amniotic fluid. Without that fluid in a distended belly, they can’t see the stomach. Don’t forget she has an umbilical cord that is feeding her all the nutrients she needs.
If she does have a stomach, but is born without the ability to swallow she will be put on some type of feeding tube until (hopefully) she eventually learns to swallow.
Transferring to Wilmington/ UNC
Going forward, all of my check ups will be in Wilmington and advanced testing will be at UNC Rex/ Chapel Hill. Since Wilmington does not have a pediatric orthopedic department, I will likely deliver at UNC Chapel Hill where they have that service available.

“Lydia’s Great Physician”
Regardless of tests albeit past, present and yet to come ….as Lydia’s paternal grandmother (Tee-Tah), I take great comfort knowing Lydia’s Great Physician is with her 24-7. (This includes not only the time while she’s growing inside her sweet mama’s womb but ALWAYS.) By God’s design…. Lydia has her own God gifted purpose…her own heartbeat…her own spiritual identity, fingerprints, spiritual blueprint, inherent testimony. I’m grateful (beyond words) witnessing the spiritual strength of this little girl. Clearly…EVEN in utero….regardless of tests…opinions…predictions Lydia via divine grace has a strong desire to LIVE.
